Scabies Spray Poisoning, A Cat Named El Lost His Life

A cat named El lost his life on May 13 2024 due to poisoning after being given a spray for scabies.

This news was posted by a TikTok account @adys143 on Monday, May 13, 2024. In the video, the cat named El is seen dead and covered in a white cloth before being buried.

"El is now in peace and doesn't hurt anymore. It has been confirmed by the vet that El's liver disease is not due to allergies or congenital disease but is purely due to poisoning with the poisonous substance trichlorfon in scabies spray. Thank you for your prayers and support, guys," wrote the uploader.

Chronology

The incident started when Anggraeni, El’s owner, took El to a veterinarian in Bandung City for a flea injection. At that place, the vet explained that this injection could also be used for fungus and scabies. However, because she wanted double protection, she bought a scabies medication product which is in the form of a spray and is used by spraying it on the skin.

After several days of use, on Wednesday, May 10, 2024, El suddenly had seizures and kept meowing. At that time, he immediately consulted a veterinarian online via the Halodoc application because it was already midnight.

The veterinarian asked for the ingredients of the product she used. One of the ingredients is called trichlorfon. The vet stated that trichlorfon actually should not be licked because it is an insecticide and suggest to bring the cat to the nearest veterinarian for direct examination. The next day, El was immediately taken to the vet for a complete hematology and blood chemistry check. The results showed that its liver had been contaminated due to licking dangerous substances.

“White blood cells (WBC) were found to increase but were not accompanied by an increase in the number of other white blood cell components. With this condition, El's condition increasingly leads to poisoning,” the veterinarian continued via WhatsApp.

El's condition improved and he was taken home. Anggraeni then began removing the IV with the vet’s permission on Sunday, May 12, 2024.

However, after the IV was removed, El's condition worsened, and then he was treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) because he was very weak. Unfortunately, on Monday, May 13, 2024, El breathed his last breath because the poison had affected his entire body.

Because the uploaded video went viral, netizen comments were very varied and many doubted whether El's death was really due to poisoning or an allergy. Anggraeni finally checked with the veterinarian whether there was a history of allergies and the vet said no.

“There is no indication of allergy based on hematology results, the eosinophil value, which is generally a component of white blood cells that respond to allergies, is normal,” said Veterinarian Prananda Eka.

This viral case is a reminder for other cat owners not to carelessly give spray medication to cats. It is also a reminder for people to be more aware of product ingredients and doesn't just promote or buy on social media. However, the brand of the spray product had contacted the owner to ask for usage details but it seems that the conversation did not end well.

A veterinarian from The Paws Pet, Marie Celina Lughti-Mergilla, explained that the habit of sleeping or simply taking shelter on the hood of a car is their natural instinct to look for a safer and warmer place. “Cats like warm places.
